Severed Ties-2008-09-01
So after I get back from Ireland, I go over to Washington D.C., so now I’m tired beyond belief. But my, it was a blast.
Ireland was pretty rocking and I had a good time over there. It’s always great to see another country and I believe everyone should leave their native country for a while if it’s within their power to do so. I hung out mostly in Galway and Bray.

Oh! And congratulations on having made it back from all your recent traveling. Coincidentally, I spent some time in the UK about the same time you were in Ireland, and only just got back, so I feel your fatigue. Travel is great, but airports are hell.

Evan might be cute and all, but acting smug about that is just being retarded. (no offence here to the artist, I’m merely commenting on the characters behaviour).
Seriously, even he must know what he’s doing to himself isn’t cool. Unless I’ve got the storyline completely wrong (which is still a possibility) he’s done similar to himself before, and the only way he would have recovered is by acknowledging there was something wrong with it.
So now, now he’s coming across as feeling victorious because he feels justified to himself for once for completely the wrong reasons. It’s actually really sad, and I feel sorry for him….

Unlike with, say, his reactions to remembering Cynthia, I actually think Evan’s reactions here are exceptionally well executed. He has a legitimate excuse to use against all the constant nagging about his health he’s had to endure, and there’s not a damn thing his sister can do about it. If I was in his place, and thank God that I’m not, I’d be feeling pretty smug myself.

As an addendum, that was just me putting myself in Evan’s overpriced shoes. I don’t actually think he’s in the right about under-eating, or that the concern of his friends and family is nothing more than nagging. ¬_¬

Evan doesn’t think he has a problem. That’s why he has a problem. Healthy people don’t act like that; they eat when they’re hungry, stop when they’re full. Evan sees himself as fat no matter how skeletal he gets; he ignores his body’s attempts to tell him there’s a problem (hunger, weakness, feeling faint, vomiting, passing out, etc), and he thinks it’s normal.
Evan is sick, both physically and mentally, and he doesn’t realize that he is.
It’s actually pretty common for people suffering from eating disorders, and this is spot-on writing, believe it or not.

I absolutely love that expression on his sisters face in that last panel. It says VOLUMES about her relationship with her brother, her concern about his weight, and her feelings about his nonchalant attitude. This is why I love this comic and keep reading! Great job man!

While I think generally he justifies his non-eating to himself, he’s got to be aware of what’s going on on some conscious level.
Maybe I’m wrong, but you can know something without accepting it.
